spiritual formation
What is “spiritual formation”?
It is the historical term used to help us understand the process for spiritual growth and transformation. The practices of spiritual formation are ancient, yet are being rediscovered by many Christians today. Spiritual disciplines help busy people with hectic lives and conflicting priorities continue to follow the biblical mandate of personal transformation: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).
Spiritual formation is concerned with three areas:
- Knowledge and understanding (such as biblical history, theology, discernment, spiritual vocation, etc.)
- Spiritual practices (such as prayer, reflection, silence, etc.)
- Participation in community (such as liturgy, service, compassion, spiritual direction, etc.)
